Atulchandra Kulkarni Creates History as the First IPS Officer from Maharashtra Appointed as Special DGP of NIA

Pune: Atulchandra Kulkarni, an IPS officer from the 1990 batch and a native of Maharashtra, has recently been appointed as the Special Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). This historic appointment marks the first time that an IPS officer from Maharashtra has been selected for this prestigious position. The Appointments Committee of the Central Cabinet (ACC), upon receiving the proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs, made certain changes in the Intelligence Bureau, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and the three central armed forces, leading to the promotion of several IPS officers to the rank of Special Director and Special DGP. Atulchandra Kulkarni is among the officers included in the list of promoted officials.

Currently serving as the Additional Director General of Police (Addl DGP) in the NIA, Atulchandra Kulkarni brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. Born in Aran village in Solapur district, Kulkarni has had a distinguished career since joining the Indian Police Service. He has previously served in various capacities in Latur, Jalgaon, Buldhana, and has actively participated in anti-Naxal operations. His previous roles include Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bhandara, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of security and zone 4 in Mumbai. Additionally, he has worked in the Intelligence Bureau for 11 years in both New Delhi and Mumbai. Throughout his career, Kulkarni has held key positions such as Joint Commissioner of Police (CP), Crime Branch, ATS Chief, and Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Since November 2022, he has been serving as the Additional Director General in the NIA. Kulkarni’s appointment as Special DGP is effective until January 2024.
