New Delhi, 29th July 2023: In a daring and heroic rescue operation, the Indian Navy successfully saved the lives of 36 Indian fishermen who had been stranded in the treacherous waters of the Bay of Bengal. The rescue mission was carried out by the valiant crew of the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Khanjar, displaying exceptional bravery and determination.

Commander Vivek Madhwal, the Navy spokesperson, confirmed the successful operation, revealing that INS Khanjar, deployed in the Bay of Bengal, played a pivotal role in rescuing the distressed fishermen. The stranded fishermen were approximately 130 nautical miles away from the Tamil Nadu coast, battling harsh weather conditions and facing dire circumstances.

The fishermen were on board three fishing vessels named Sabarinathan, Kalaivani, and V Sami when they encountered distress at sea. For more than two days, they had been grappling with unfavourable conditions, including engine breakdown, lack of fuel, and provisions. Their survival was uncertain until the Navy’s swift and efficient rescue operation came to their aid.

Despite the challenging sea conditions, the dedicated crew of INS Khanjar exhibited remarkable courage and resourcefulness. They swiftly provided essential provisions to the stranded fishing vessels, ensuring that the fishermen had enough supplies to sustain themselves until their safe return.

The rescue operation was not without its challenges. INS Khanjar had to navigate through turbulent waters, battling the elements to reach the stranded vessels. The team’s unwavering determination and quick thinking allowed them to tow the fishing vessels for more than 30 hours, securing the fishermen’s safe return.

The successful rescue culminated in the fishermen’s joyous return to the Chennai harbour on Friday. The timely and effective response of the Indian Navy averted a potential tragedy, and the rescued fishermen expressed their gratitude for being given a second chance at life.
