Creating a Vastu-Friendly Home: 10 Essential Tips for Your Home Makeover

When planning a home makeover, it’s important to keep Vastu principles in mind, even if your current residence is not designed according to the Shastras. Many Indians prioritize Vastu-compliant homes that adhere to the principles of Vedic architecture. However, only a small percentage of urban real estate projects meet these criteria. Manasi Thakkur, a Mumbai-based Vastukar, believes that if you already own a home that doesn’t conform to these ancient norms, every renovation presents an opportunity to remodel your residence according to Vastu tips.

  1. Doorway to Success: Ensure that the main entrance faces east or north. These directions are believed to allow optimal prana (life force energy) into the space, promoting health, wealth, and prosperity. Avoid aligning three doors in a linear fashion, as it depletes the residence of prana.
  2. Divine Light: Adequate lighting is not only an architectural necessity but also a Vastu essential. The ideal home should have ample natural light during the day and soft artificial lighting in the evening. Avoid using harsh or bright lighting in bedrooms or living areas; reserve them for home offices, kitchens, and restrooms.
  3. Sacred Groves: According to Vastu, plants bring positive energy into a home. Create a window-sill garden, place flower pots at the doorstep, and incorporate low-light plants in your interiors. Plants with rounded leaves, such as money plants, rubber plants, and fiddle leaf figs, are believed to usher in good luck and prosperity.
  4. Mirror, On The Wall: Placing a mirror in the wrong direction, even in a Vastu-compliant home, can create chaos. Avoid placing mirrors on the south or west walls of the bedroom, as it may lead to sleep disorders and mental health issues. It is advisable to cover mirrors when not in use.
  5. Compliant Kitchens: The kitchen holds significant importance in Vastu. Ideally, the south-east direction is reserved for the kitchen, as it is considered the source of energy and nutrition. Place the stove towards the south-east and the sink towards the north-west. Ensure adequate ventilation and natural light in the kitchen.
  6. Stabilizing Spaces: To promote stability, place heavier items such as furniture and appliances in the south and west directions. These directions are associated with the element of earth, symbolizing stability, strength, and protection. Avoid keeping sharp or pointed objects in the south and south-west directions.
  7. Sleep Sanctuaries: According to Vastu, the best placement for a bedroom is in the south-west corner of the house. Position the bed along the south or east wall, with the head towards the south or east direction.
  8. Prayer Corners: Designate the northeast or east direction for the pooja room or meditation corner. Avoid placing toilets in these directions, as they may lead to health issues and financial instability.
  9. Colour Therapy: If you’re unsure about Vastu-compliant colors for individual rooms, opt for ivory or off-white shades. These colors are considered remedial for Vastu doshas in any direction.
  10. Healing Sounds: Enhance positive energy by hanging a wind chime or temple bell in the north or east direction. Place it on a window sill or the sturdy branch of a tree. This simple addition can multiply your good luck, according to Vastu.

By incorporating these Vastu tips into your home makeover, you can create a Vastu-friendly environment that promotes harmony, well-being, and positive energy in your living space.
