Netflix Drops Apple’s In-App Purchase Option: Subscribers to Shift Payment Methods

In a significant move, Netflix has informed its subscribers that they can no longer pay for the service through Apple’s in-app purchase option. This change requires Netflix users who have been using Apple’s payment system to switch to alternative payment methods. The decision follows a similar move in 2018 when Netflix stopped allowing users to sign up for the service via iPhone and iPad.

According to reports by The Streamable, Netflix is urging its users to update their payment methods as part of the transition away from Apple’s in-app purchase option. The streaming giant had previously allowed users to continue paying for the service through Apple’s payment system, but it seems the company is now determined to reduce its dependence on Apple and retain more revenue.

The updated wording on Netflix’s support page for the US highlights the shift: “Some Apple-billed members in select countries may be prompted to add a new payment method to continue their subscription.”

In a related development, Netflix has decided to phase out its most affordable ad-free plan, previously priced at $11.99 per month. This change is scheduled to commence in Canada and the United Kingdom in the second quarter of this year. Consequently, the most cost-effective ad-free alternative for Netflix subscribers will be the $15.99 plan.

This strategic move by Netflix not only signifies a shift in its payment processing but also indicates a broader trend among content providers seeking more control over their revenue streams.
