UGC Directs Higher Educational Institutions to Provide 100% Refund on Admission Cancellation

Pune, 8th July 2023: In a significant development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive to all higher educational institutions to refund 100 percent of the fees to students who cancel their admissions for any reason. The UGC has set a deadline for institutes to process the refunds by September 30.

The decision was made following a discussion held during the 507th meeting of the UGC on June 27. The commission took note of several complaints and proposals highlighting the difficulties faced by students in obtaining refunds. In response, the UGC has instructed institutions to implement the new rule starting from the academic year 2023-24.

This directive comes as a major relief for students and their parents, as many educational institutes across the country have been reluctant to refund fees once a student cancels their admission. Oftentimes, students secure admission in one institution and later opt to cancel it if they receive an opportunity to join a different program or institute of their preference.

Previously, students faced challenges in obtaining refunds for their fees in such situations. However, with the introduction of this new rule, colleges and universities will now be required to provide a complete refund of fees when a student cancels their admission.
