CBSE Announces New Curriculum and Books for Grades 3 and 6, Maintains Status Quo for Other Classes

NCERT to Introduce Fresh Syllabi and Textbooks for Select Grades, Keeping Consistency in Academic Structure for Other Levels

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has disclosed plans to introduce a revamped curriculum and textbooks specifically tailored for students in Grades 3 and 6 for the upcoming academic year 2024-25. This initiative comes as part of the educational reforms aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. However, there will be no alterations in the academic framework for other classes during the stated period, as communicated by CBSE officials.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is currently in the process of developing and finalizing the new syllabi and textbooks for Grades 3 and 6. These educational materials are anticipated to be released soon, paving the way for a contemporary learning experience for students in these grades. CBSE has advised affiliated schools to adopt these new resources in lieu of the existing NCERT textbooks until the year 2023.

In addition to the curriculum overhaul, NCERT is crafting a bridge course for Grade 6 and concise guidelines for Grade 3 to facilitate a seamless transition for students, ensuring alignment with the new pedagogical practices and curriculum framework of 2023. These resources will be readily available to schools online upon receipt from NCERT.

To support educators in implementing the envisioned changes in teaching methodologies as per NEP-2020, CBSE will conduct capacity-building programs for school administrators and teachers. These initiatives aim to equip educators with the requisite skills and insights to effectively implement the new curriculum guidelines.

The revision of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) after nearly two decades underscores the commitment of the Ministry of Education towards enhancing the quality and relevance of education in India. As part of this endeavor, the NCERT is diligently preparing new school textbooks in alignment with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, as mandated by NEP 2020.

While emphasizing adherence to the prescribed curriculum directives, CBSE has urged schools to incorporate methodologies such as Multilingualism, Art-Integrated Education, Experiential Learning, and Pedagogical Plans, wherever feasible. This holistic approach aims to foster a conducive learning environment that caters to the diverse needs and learning styles of students.

In light of these developments, schools are advised to align their practices with the recommendations outlined in NCF-SE-2023. This includes compliance with guidelines pertaining to content, pedagogical strategies, assessment methodologies, and other relevant areas as communicated by CBSE.

The implementation of the National Curriculum Framework for the foundational stage (FS) in 2022 marked a significant milestone in restructuring the early education system. With the introduction of learning-teaching materials (LTM) like “Jaadui Pitara” encompassing interactive tools and engaging resources, the foundational stage curriculum aims to enhance the learning experience for young learners.

Furthermore, the rationalization of syllabi for classes 6 to 12 in 2022, amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, reflects NCERT’s commitment to alleviating the academic burden on students. While contentious, these adjustments aimed to streamline the curriculum while maintaining academic integrity.

As the educational landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like the revised curriculum and textbooks for specific grades underscore the concerted efforts towards fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning ecosystem in India.
