Weather Rollercoaster: Pune’s New Year Celebrations Under the Cloud of Uncertainty

As Pune gears up for New Year’s Day celebrations, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a potential shift in weather patterns, with light rain expected to make an appearance. Residents anxiously await the turn of the year amidst concerns about rain impacting festivities.

In a noticeable change from the current clear skies and gradually rising minimum temperatures, Pune and other parts of Maharashtra are likely to experience a shift in weather conditions. Over the past week, the minimum temperature in Pune rose from 11 degrees Celsius to approximately 14 degrees Celsius, signaling a departure from the recent chill.

Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, Head of the Weather Forecasting Department at IMD Pune, shared insights into the expected weather changes. “There is a chance of light rain over Maharashtra during the New Year’s Days, particularly in isolated places of North Eastern Maharashtra. As predicted earlier, the interaction with Easterly winds will likely affect North Western India from December 30. Light isolated rain is expected over North Western and Central India during December 30 to January 2, 2024,” said Dr. Kashyapi.

A notable factor contributing to the anticipated weather shift is the cold winds predicted to sweep through northern India and the northeastern states, ushering in cloudy weather for Pune and surrounding regions. The IMD also forecasts an increase in fog in certain areas during this period.

Last week, the Pashan neighborhood in Pune experienced a minimum temperature of nine degrees Celsius, further emphasizing the shift towards milder temperatures.

Weather Forecast for Pune in the Coming Days: The maximum temperature is expected to range between 31–33 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature hovering around 13–14 degrees Celsius throughout the week, as per the IMD forecast.

As the city remains on alert for potential rain on New Year’s Day, residents and event organizers are advised to stay updated on the latest weather developments to ensure a smooth and enjoyable celebration.
