Water Levels Surge in Pune Dams as Catchment Areas Benefit from Rainfall

Pune – The catchment areas of Pune district have experienced substantial rainfall in recent hours, resulting in rising water levels at the dams that supply water to Pune city. In response to this, the irrigation department has increased the discharge from the dams into the river.

Panshet Dam, with a capacity of 10.65 TMC (thousand million cubic feet), has reached its maximum capacity, standing at 100%. As a result, the water discharge from the dam and the power generation center has been raised from 600 Cusecs to 1,283 Cusecs as of 7 pm. Officials have indicated that any further adjustments to the discharge rate will be determined based on the rainfall received in the catchment area.

Likewise, the water level at Warasgaon Dam, with a capacity of 21.82 TMC, has also reached its full capacity, standing at 100%. The discharge from the power generation center at this dam has been increased from 600 Cusecs to 1,197 Cusecs.

The combined storage capacity of the four dams in the Khadakwasla cluster, including Panshet, Warasgaon, Khadakwasla, and Temghar, currently stands at 94.02% (27.41 TMC), compared to 100% (29.15 TMC) reported on the same day last year. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for the district, forecasting “thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph at one or two places)” for the day.
