Residents of Wagholi have raised their voices against what they perceive as an unjust property tax system imposed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Despite regular tax payments, they argue that there has been a lack of improvement in essential local infrastructure, including roads, water supply, and waste management.
A Cry for Fairness
The Wagholi Against Corruption Organisation (WACO) is leading the charge against the PMC, questioning the logic behind the property tax levied on residents. WACO believes that demanding property taxes without delivering tangible improvements is unreasonable and unjust.
A Flood of Emails
In response to their concerns, WACO has launched an aggressive email campaign, with a goal to send 2,000 emails and written complaints to the PMC within two weeks. The organization is determined to flood PMC’s inbox with these emails, hoping to garner the attention needed to spur PMC into taking meaningful actions to enhance the quality of life in Wagholi.
A Call for Accountability
Anil Kumar Mishra, President of WACO, emphasized the need for fairness in this situation. He stated, “It is not fair for the residents of Wagholi to pay these taxes when no improvements have been made in the area. This is why we are calling it illogical property tax.” According to Mishra, PMC is seeking payments for both the current year and the previous year, intensifying residents’ concerns.
Seeking a Response
WACO has set a 15-day deadline for PMC to respond to their concerns. If they do not receive a satisfactory answer within that time frame, they are prepared to escalate the issue by bringing it to the attention of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and even the Prime Minister of India.
