Unveiling ‘Behind the Woods’: A Glimpse into a Unique Folk Culture in Pune

On October 14th, Pune will come alive with a cultural extravaganza titled “Behind the Woods,” a mesmerizing event that promises to uncover the rich tapestry of folk culture. This captivating showcase is presented by the Kalinga Kala Kendra Trust in collaboration with the Department of Culture (Language, Literature Dept.) of the Government of Odisha. The stage is set at Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe Rangmandir, Yerawada, starting at 4 pm, and it’s an initiative led by Dr. Mamata Mishra, Founder President and renowned international artist.

A Celebration of Folk Culture

“Behind the Woods” is a celebration of the diverse and vibrant world of folk culture. Dr. Mamata Mishra and her dedicated team have joined forces with the Department of Culture to curate an event that promises to be both educational and enchanting. The program is carefully designed to take the audience on a journey through various regional folk traditions.

Diverse Performances

The event lineup is nothing short of spectacular. It features a captivating folk song performance by Smt. Anindita Das, a playback singer, international performer, and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee. Audiences can expect to be enthralled by the grace and energy of traditional folk dance forms from Odisha, including the Chau dance of Mayurbhanj and Bagha Nritya (Tiger dance) from Ganjam.

Echoes of Bengal

The cultural journey continues with soul-stirring folk songs from West Bengal. The melodic tunes of Bhatiali, Gombhira, Bhawaiya, Jumur, and Bowl—a devotional folk song—will be brought to life by talented performers Pipal Ray, Sagarika Das, Ipsita Mohanty, and Ipsa Mohapatra.

Classical Excellence

In addition to folk performances, the event boasts classical dance displays that are nothing short of breathtaking. Watch as Archana Basu mesmerizes with her Odissi dance, Paulomi Chatterjee graces the stage with Gaudiya, Anwesha Singh showcases Uday Sankar Style, and Sayani Nanda enthralls with Kathak.

A Glimpse of Maharashtra

Local talent will shine as Karuna Patil, Founder of Ruturanga Cultural Group, presents the rich traditions and folk dances of Maharashtra. Marathi festivals, including Ashadi Ekadashi, Shravan, Bhadrapada, and Ghat Sthapana (Navratri), will be vividly brought to life through beautifully choreographed dances. A tribal group from Dahanu, Maharashtra, will delight the audience with the famous Tarapa Dance.

The Host with the Most

Anchoring this cultural spectacle is Odisha-based RJ Swati, who will guide the audience through the diverse performances and narratives.
