In an unusual turn of events, a speed camera positioned near Bhumkar Chowk, just a short distance from Navale Bridge on the bustling Mumbai-Bangalore Highway, has reportedly vanished. The device, designed to curb overspeeding, was discovered missing by a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) responsible for its upkeep.
The camera, along with a Vehicle Actuated Speed Sign (VAAS) device, had been installed in March of this year by the Save Life Foundation. The NGO was also tasked with maintaining the camera and related equipment. However, during a routine maintenance check on September 22, the camera and device were found to be conspicuously absent from their designated location.
The decision to install the speed camera followed a series of accidents in the vicinity of Navale Bridge, with overspeeding by heavy vehicles cited as a contributing factor. In response, the highway traffic police initiated measures to penalize vehicles exceeding speed limits in this area.
Interestingly, the complainant has indicated that the camera went missing sometime between July 28 and August 22 of this year. Curiously, neither the traffic department nor the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had reported any theft during this period, leading to questions surrounding the circumstances of the disappearance.
A case has been officially registered at the Sinhagad Road Police Station against unidentified individuals. The ongoing investigation aims to shed light on this mysterious incident and recover the missing speed camera.
