Unresolved Issue: Illegal Halting Leads to Fatal Accident on Pune-Mumbai Expressway

Samriddhi Highway Accident

Pune: Despite repeated warnings and advisories from highway authorities, the problem of illegal halting on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway remains unresolved. A recent accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers associated with such practices. The unfortunate incident involved a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus traveling from Pune to Thane, resulting in the tragic loss of the bus conductor’s life. The deceased, identified as Shivraj Mali, was a resident of Dharashiv district.

The accident occurred when the bus conductor disembarked from the vehicle to guide the driver. Tragically, he was struck by a container truck and lost his life instantly. The container truck driver also sustained injuries in the collision. An official from the highway authorities explained the circumstances, stating, “Halting vehicles on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is strictly prohibited. However, in this instance, the bus halted due to a passenger altercation with the driver and conductor. The conductor, standing on the road at night without any warning indicators, was directing the driver while maneuvering the bus. The location where they attempted to stop the bus had a sharp turn, making it impossible for the container truck approaching from behind to control its speed. This resulted in the tragic accident.”

The accident took place at the 17.900 KM mark on the expressway, and the container truck driver sustained minor injuries. The incident unfolded around 8:50 pm on Friday. Fortunately, no passengers on the bus were harmed during the accident. Nevertheless, the incident underscores the pressing issue of illegal halting on the expressway, with many individuals, particularly those traveling in their cars, frequently halting to admire the natural beauty of Lonavala during the rainy season.
