Traffic Chaos at Pune University: Commissioner Grills Metro Officials Over Delays

Pune, India : The traffic nightmare at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk has taken center stage as Commissioner of Police, Amitesh Kumar, confronted Pune Metro officials regarding ongoing delays and the continuous gridlock.

In a video that has since gone viral, Commissioner Amitesh Kumar is seen questioning Metro representatives, demanding to know, “Aapko kitna time lagne wala hai,” emphasizing the urgency of completing the work promptly. The plea included a suggestion to continue work overnight and into the early hours of the morning.

Despite ongoing road construction and metro projects aimed at alleviating traffic issues, Pune residents remain frustrated with the persistent bottlenecks, especially at critical junctures like University Chowk. Multiple complaints from the public, visits from MLA Siddharth Shirole, and even traffic diversion plans by the Pune City Traffic Police have failed to bring significant relief.

The recent diversion plan implemented by the Pune City Traffic Police restricts cars from accessing Savitribai Phule Pune University through the main entrance on Senapati Bapat Road and Ganeshkhind Road. Commuters are now compelled to take an alternative route, involving a right turn from the Millennium Gate near the Chatushrungi Police Station.

Furthermore, there are additional restrictions on vehicles entering SPPU through Baner and Aundh’s main entrance. Drivers from Aundh Road must turn left at University Chowk, navigating through Aundh Road to reach the Millennium Gate. Meanwhile, those coming from Baner are directed to enter through the Millennium Gate.

The persistent traffic issues and delays in the Pune Metro project have not only inconvenienced daily commuters but have also raised questions about the efficiency and accountability of the ongoing infrastructure developments in the city.
