Toxic Troubles: Mahalunge Residents Demand Urgent Action Against Continuous Flow of Contaminated Water

Residents of Mahalunge, particularly those from societies like Pristine Equilife Homes, are grappling with a persistent issue of toxic water flowing continuously on the roads in Shitala Devi Nagar. The situation not only poses health risks but also threatens the safety of citizens, prompting urgent demands for action.

Yashpal Adpawar, a resident of Pristine Equilife Homes, expressed frustration, stating, “The issue has been ongoing for a considerable time. Despite temporary measures taken by both residents and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the problem persists. The PMC claims to have finalized budgets and quotations, but no permanent solution has been implemented. We need attention and a permanent resolution to this toxic water flow issue.”

Vaibhav Dhole, another resident from the same society, emphasized the impact on the area, saying, “Due to blocked drainage lines, toxic water surfaces on the roads, exacerbating stink and health concerns, especially with continuous garbage dumping in our vicinity. Our follow-ups with the PMC have resulted in temporary solutions, which are inadequate. We demand a permanent fix.”

Abhijit Chaugule shed light on the historical context, stating, “During the development of this area, the drainage pipeline was intended to be extended, but financial disputes halted progress. Consequently, only a section of the pipeline was constructed, leading to the current problem. Requests to the PMC Aundh-Baner Ward Office for inspections and permanent solutions have gone unanswered.”

In an additional statement from Equilife Homes Speaks, it was highlighted that the issue has persisted for years without permanent measures being taken by the PMC.

Girish Dapkekar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner at PMC Aundh-Baner Ward Office, assured action, stating, “We have conducted a meeting with several society residents, noting their concerns and suggestions. The relevant departments will be informed, and appropriate action will be taken promptly.”
