Despite Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) persistent efforts to curb illegal dumping, the Mula-Mutha river stretch near Hinjewadi remains a hotspot for the unauthorized disposal of construction debris. The ongoing construction boom in Pune has led to widespread dumping in violation of recycling norms, with the recent incident in Hinjewadi drawing attention to the environmental consequences of these illicit activities.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and MP Supriya Sule brought the matter to light through a social media post expressing her concern about the unlawful dumping, specifically in the Blue Ridge Township area in Hinjewadi. Sule emphasized the significant harm caused to the riverbed and the surrounding environment.
In her post, she urged the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the district collector to promptly address the issue and take corrective action against those responsible for the illegal dumping.
Illegal dumping of debris is not confined to Hinjewadi alone; it is a citywide issue, especially near wetlands, causing environmental damage and posing health risks. The dust generated during the transportation and unloading of debris contributes to air pollution, affecting both the environment and public health.
Local citizens in Hinjewadi reported the illegal dumping to authorities and local representatives. MP Sule’s intervention has brought attention to the matter, and citizens hope that the MPCB and the district collector will take appropriate action against the culprits.
An official from the Solid Waste Department at PMC mentioned that regular patrolling is conducted to identify and penalize those involved in illegal debris dumping. Fines will be imposed on individuals found engaging in such activities.
