Spike in Eye Infection Cases: Pune Municipal Corporation Reports 571 Cases in a Day

Pune: The city of Pune is currently grappling with a notable increase in cases of eye infections. In a recent update, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) disclosed that a staggering 571 cases were reported on a single day.

According to data, the period from January to August has witnessed over 11,000 cases of eye infections in Pune. Consequently, medical professionals specializing in ophthalmology are urging the general public to exercise caution and strictly adhere to precautionary measures to safeguard their eyes.

Since the beginning of August, the city has observed a surge in eye infection cases. Among those affected, school children seem to be the most vulnerable demographic. As a response to this situation, the PMC has initiated thorough checks within educational institutions to contain the spread of the infection.

Suryakant Deokar, Chief Immunization Officer, elaborated, “The primary cause of these eye infections is the adenovirus, and symptoms typically appear within 2 to 14 days after exposure.”

Doctor Avinash Bhondwe further explained, “The duration of the infection can last up to 5 days, with a majority of patients experiencing a relatively swift recovery. The intensity of the infection varies based on the subtype of adenovirus. In cases of severe infections, seeking prompt medical attention from an ophthalmologist is recommended. To prevent the transmission of infections, individuals are advised to avoid touching their eyes with unwashed hands, refrain from sharing personal items, gently clean their eyes with a damp cloth, discontinue the use of contact lenses if infected, and promptly consult an ophthalmologist if the condition deteriorates.”

As the city works to contain the spread of eye infections, proactive measures and vigilant hygiene practices are pivotal in mitigating the impact of this surge and maintaining the well-being of the residents.
