Safety First: Pune Residents and Officials Push for Stricter Fire Measures in Malls

In the wake of a recent incident at an Aundh mall that raised alarms about fire safety, officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority and Pune Municipal Corporation are urging a meticulous examination of fire safety measures at malls and multiplexes in Pune. A resident’s experience at a Baner mall, where fire exit routes were seemingly compromised, has intensified the call for enhanced safety protocols.

During a visit to a mall, a Baner resident chose the fire exit over the elevator, only to encounter unpleasant conditions. The fire exit, intended solely for emergency situations, showcased signs of neglect, with the presence of trash, broken furniture, and an area designated for cardboard box disposal. The chief fire officer emphasized that such misuse of fire exits poses a significant risk, as these routes can be obstructed during emergencies if not kept clear.

The National Building Code, 2016, outlines specific guidelines for construction, exits, materials, and power supply, with a dedicated ‘fire and life safety section’ covering fire protection, life safety, and fire prevention. These regulations are applicable to various structures, including high-rises, hotels, schools, businesses, and industrial units.

Fire safety officials are particularly concerned about electrical short circuits, citing them as a primary cause of fires in shopping centers and commercial buildings. Overheating in mall kitchens, especially in restaurants or food courts, is also identified as a potential hazard. The recent incident has prompted a renewed focus on adherence to safety protocols in these areas.

Malls in Pune are required to follow regulations that dictate the placement of fire extinguishers, ensuring they are positioned 45 meters apart. The number of exits and extinguishers is determined by the size of the mall, with clear labeling indicating the classification of fires and usage guidelines.

Taking a proactive approach, a Pune mall has collaborated with government agencies, including the local fire department, police station, anti-terrorism squad, and bomb detection and disposal squads. This collaboration aims to conduct joint drills for various crisis situations, fostering improved coordination and efficiency in handling emergencies such as fires, terrorist attacks, and bomb threats.

As scrutiny on fire safety intensifies, it is crucial for mall authorities to prioritize regular inspections, maintenance, and adherence to safety guidelines to ensure the well-being of visitors and prevent potential disasters.
