Safety at Stake: Neglected Maintenance of Katraj Tunnel Ghat Road Raises Alarms

Katraj, November 2, 2023: While discussions about the new tunnel on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway and recent accidents on the Navale Bridge continue to make headlines, concerns are mounting over the deteriorating condition of the old Katraj Tunnel Ghat road. The Public Works Department’s apparent neglect of maintenance and repair has left this vital ghat road in a state of disrepair, with uprooted side rails and hazardous fallen stones at numerous locations.

Adding to the woes, a significant number of trees have taken root on the sides of the protective wall. Despite the expectation of post-monsoon clearance, this crucial task has been overlooked. Notice boards and milestones along the ghat route are also in dire need of repair, with protective ramparts broken at multiple spots.

The old Katraj Tunnel Ghat serves as a critical route for countless vehicles traveling from Pune to Satara, especially for business and work-related purposes. This heavy traffic flow persists around the clock, underscoring the urgency of immediate repair and maintenance.

One of the most glaring safety concerns highlighted by local drivers is the absence of reflectors at the ghat’s turns, leading to confusion among motorists navigating the winding roads. The demand for reflective markers to guide vehicles safely through these curves has become increasingly apparent. Additionally, calls have been made for the repair of protective walls within the ghat to enhance safety and bolster the overall infrastructure integrity.

As the neglected state of the Katraj Tunnel Ghat road raises legitimate safety concerns, it is imperative that authorities take swift and effective action to rectify the issues plaguing this crucial transportation route. The safety of commuters and the integrity of the road infrastructure should remain a top priority.
