After more than four years of closure for renovation, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is gearing up to reopen the Dr. Homi Bhabha Hospital, bringing significant relief to residents in and around Shivajinagar.
Addressing Long-standing Concerns
Siddharth Shirole, MLA from Shivajinagar, recently held discussions with PMC health officials and additional municipal commissioner Ravindra Binwade to expedite the hospital’s reopening. It was revealed during the meeting that the delay in reopening was primarily due to challenges in finding a suitable-sized lift to fit the narrower-than-expected lift duct of the newly renovated four-storey structure.
Overcoming Obstacles
Shirole highlighted that the PMC was aware of the lift duct issue even before the onset of the model code of conduct preceding the Lok Sabha elections. Despite this, no significant steps were taken to address the problem. However, the PMC has now decided to order a tailor-made lift, with recommendations from experts in the public works department (PWD) to ensure structural stability. Once installed, the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD) will resume operations promptly.
Future Plans for Healthcare Delivery
Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, health officer of the PMC, affirmed that the hospital’s development was underway, with plans to initiate OPD services at the earliest convenience. Following the completion of electrical and other essential works, maternity facilities will be introduced to cater to the healthcare needs of the community.
A Long-awaited Solution
The closure of Dr. Homi Bhabha Hospital for renovation inconvenienced the local populace for several years. However, the new four-storey building, equipped with an OPD, indoor facilities, and an operation theatre for maternity care, promises to enhance healthcare accessibility in the region. With the lift procurement issue on the verge of resolution, residents can look forward to the hospital’s reopening, marking a significant milestone in improving healthcare infrastructure in Shivajinagar.
