After a prolonged dry spell, the much-anticipated rains have made a triumphant return to Pune and its surrounding regions. Over the past 24 hours, the ghat areas in the district have experienced a welcome downpour, bringing relief to the parched landscape. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for the ghat sections for the past three days, anticipating this much-needed precipitation.
According to data provided by the IMD, the Tamhini Ghat area received a substantial 130 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Additionally, Lonavala recorded 110 mm of rain, while Maval received 112 mm. These figures highlight the considerable impact of the recent rain activity in rejuvenating these regions.
Beyond the ghat areas, other parts of the district also enjoyed a generous share of rainfall. IMD reported 77 mm of rain in Junnar, 49 mm in Bhor, and 37 mm in Khed. Chinchwad received 27 mm of rainfall, while Rajgurunagar experienced 17 mm. These rainfall figures reflect a broader distribution of precipitation across Pune district.
Despite this recent rain spell, Pune continues to grapple with a rainfall deficit, with IMD reporting a 15% deficit in rainfall accumulation as of September 9th. To address this deficit and further replenish water reserves in the region, IMD has issued a yellow alert for the district, effective today and tomorrow. The forecast predicts “heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in ghat areas” for today and “heavy rainfall at isolated places in ghat areas” for tomorrow.
As the monsoon season progresses, the return of rainfall is a welcome sight for Pune residents, offering hope for a more balanced and hydrated landscape in the days ahead.
