Restoration of Mahadji Shinde Chhatri in Wanowrie, Pune, Underway

The restoration process of the historic Mahadji Shinde Chhatri located in Wanowrie, Pune, is currently in progress. Despite the ongoing restoration work, the site will remain open to visitors, with the project expected to conclude in approximately one month.

Over the years, the Chhatri’s roof has developed structural issues, resulting in water leakage during rainy periods. Additionally, moss has accumulated on the stone surfaces, and excessive vegetation growth has been observed. Furthermore, cracks have appeared on the walls, indicating the need for comprehensive restoration efforts.

Yashwant Bhosale, the Maharashtra Superintendent of Scindia Devasthan Trust, stated, “The restoration of this heritage structure is necessitated by the presence of minor cracks, leaks, and moss on the stone surfaces. The restoration work will encompass repairs to the slabs, doors, and windows and is scheduled to be completed within one month. Moreover, waterproofing measures have been undertaken, as certain portions of the heritage structure were previously restored 15 years ago.”

The construction of Shinde Chhatri can be traced back to the 18th century. Initially conceived as a Shiva temple by Mahadji Shinde, the project remained incomplete due to his untimely demise. Subsequently, in his honor, a memorial was commissioned by Madhavrao Scindia of Gwalior, and the construction was finalized in 1965.

The ongoing restoration efforts seek to preserve and protect this significant historical and architectural landmark for future generations to appreciate. Visitors are encouraged to witness the restoration process while exploring the rich heritage of Mahadji Shinde Chhatri in Wanowrie.
