Residents of Balewadi High Street Urge PMC Intervention as Garbage Woes Persist

Residents of Shitladevi Nagar, Baner, residing near Balewadi High Street, are expressing their frustration over the ongoing garbage dumping issues plaguing their locality. The concerned citizens are urging the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address the problem promptly and implement permanent solutions.

This area, falling under the jurisdiction of PMC, has been grappling with garbage-related challenges since 2018. The primary concern revolves around the garbage dump in nearby slum areas, causing distress for residents located 50-70 meters away. The issues include persistent odors, a surge in mosquitoes, and difficulty breathing fresh air. The accumulation of garbage has reached a point where only one vehicle can navigate the road, hindering daily movement. The escalating garbage problem has also led to an increase in the population of pigs and other insects. Additionally, inadequate water pipelines for dirty water disposal have been noted.

The lack of streetlights on the back side of the area raises safety concerns, particularly for women walking alone after 7:00 PM. Furthermore, the process of supplying water tanks to the societies is still underway.

A resident behind Balewadi High Street expressed disappointment, stating that despite more than 1000 residents filing complaints with PMC over two years, no permanent action has been taken. The resident noted, “They come once in 6 months to clean the dump rather than coming regularly.”

In response, PMC official Promod Ukirde assured, “I will look into this issue soon and will be solved by Monday, 12th February 2024.”

Residents are calling on the administration to take swift action, focusing on water pipelines, proper garbage disposal, water tanks, and the installation of streetlights to enhance the overall quality of life.
