Pune’s Western Ring Road: Land Acquisition Moves Forward Despite Challenges

In a significant development, the Pune district administration has taken the decision to compulsorily acquire land in 13 villages spanning Maval, Mulshi, and Haveli talukas to facilitate the construction of the western section of the ring road project, led by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The decision was made during a meeting presided over by District Collector Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh.

The high-level meeting, which convened under the auspices of the District Collector, delved into the matter of land acquisition for the crucial ring road project. Key stakeholders, including representatives from MSRDC, the Land Acquisition Officer, and the District Officer, were present. It was unanimously agreed that, if necessary, police assistance would be sought to ensure the project progresses without undue delays.

MSRDC has undertaken the ambitious task of constructing a 172 km long and 110-meter wide ring road with the primary aim of alleviating traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad cities. The undertaking is set to be executed in two distinct phases: East and West. While the eastern phase is poised to impact villages in Maval, Khed, Haveli, Purandar, and Bhor, the western phase will affect villages in Bhor, Haveli, Mulshi, and Maval.

The land acquisition process for the western section of the project was initiated on July 5, with notices dispatched to affected villagers and a consent deadline set for July 30. Responding to concerns raised by local residents regarding the assessment process, the deadline was subsequently extended to August 21. Additionally, an offer of a 25% additional remuneration was extended as an incentive for timely consent.

Despite the extended deadline and the incentive offered, residents from 13 villages, including six in Maval taluka, three in Mulshi taluka, and four in Haveli taluka, have not provided their consent. Consequently, the administration has taken the decision to proceed with compulsory land acquisition by issuing final notices.
