Pune’s Traffic Nightmare: Heavy Vehicles Cause Chaos, Prompting Strict Measures

Heavy vehicles wreaked havoc on Pune’s roads recently, leading to chaos and frustration among daily commuters. A significant incident occurred in Bavdhan, where a truck became lodged near a car showroom, blocking traffic for nearly an hour. The driver abandoned the vehicle, compounding the traffic congestion and leaving locals scrambling to resolve the situation.

In response to such incidents and escalating traffic woes, the Pune City Traffic Police has announced stringent measures. Effective March 2024, heavy vehicles such as trailers and containers are prohibited from entering the city via twelve main roads. This move aims to alleviate traffic congestion caused by oversized vehicles navigating through city streets.

The stranded truck incident in Bavdhan underscores the urgent need for traffic management reforms. The resulting gridlock inconvenienced countless commuters and underscored the necessity of proactive measures to prevent such disruptions in the future.

To provide alternative routes for heavy vehicles, the Pune City Traffic Police has designated specific roads for their transit, mitigating the impact on city traffic. These measures aim to streamline vehicular movement and ensure smoother commuting experiences for residents.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashikant Borate emphasized the importance of these regulations in curbing traffic problems caused by heavy vehicles. The decision to restrict their entry during peak traffic hours reflects a commitment to enhancing overall traffic management in Pune.

The 12 points where heavy vehicles are strictly prohibited are; Noble Hospital Square on Solapur Road, Kesnand Phata on Ahmednagar Road, Harris Bridge on Mumbai-Pune Old Highway, Rajiv Gandhi Bridge on Aundh, Hotel Radha Chowk on Baner Road, Chandini Chowk on Paud Road, Vadgaon Bridge Chowk on Sinhagad Road, Katraj Chowk on Satara Road, Khadi Machine Chowk on Katraj Mantarwadi Bypass Road and Bopkhel Phata Chowk on Alandi Road.
