Pune’s Smart Move: Repurposing FOB for Sustainable Urban Planning

In a remarkable step towards sustainability and cost-efficiency, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has opted for an eco-friendly approach to address traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in the city. Instead of demolishing the existing Foot Overbridge (FOB) at Vishrantwadi Chowk, PMC has chosen to dismantle and repurpose it at two different locations in Pune, namely Pratik Nagar and Shivajinagar.

The decision stems from the need to alleviate traffic chaos at Vishrantwadi Chowk, where traffic flows in eight different directions, particularly during peak hours. A survey conducted by PMC revealed that an innovative combination of a grade separator and an underpass at this intersection could potentially reduce traffic congestion by a significant 80%. However, the current FOB does not align with this vision, prompting PMC to initially consider demolishing it.

Ajay Kumar Wayse, Executive Engineer of PMC’s Building Department, explained, “We initially planned to demolish the FOB, but after discussions with the contractor about the feasibility of dismantling and reusing it, we decided on an alternative approach.”

This eco-friendly initiative not only serves as a practical solution to traffic issues but also seeks to avoid potential public and civic activist backlash. The PMC has previously faced criticism for its handling of the demolition of two flyovers, specifically the Nal Stop and Pune University flyovers, which raised concerns about planning and the misuse of public funds.

Instead of demolishing the Vishrantwadi Chowk FOB, PMC will dismantle it and repurpose the structure in two strategic locations within the city. One of these repurposed FOBs will link the COEP ground with the hostel of the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) Technological University in Shivajinagar, while the other will be located on Alandi Road near Pratik Nagar.

This innovative approach not only showcases a commitment to sustainable urban development but also emphasizes the importance of thoughtful resource utilization in urban planning.
