In a groundbreaking study conducted by Stanford University professor Ilya Strebulaev, the role of Indian graduates in shaping the landscape of US unicorns has come to light, with Pune Institute of Technology (PICT) standing out as a key contributor. The study showcased that PICT, based in Pune, has left an indelible mark, with four of its alumni serving as founders or co-founders of successful US unicorn companies.
While the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) topped the list with 16 US unicorn founders, PICT’s presence in this elite group underscores the institute’s commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and self-employment among its students.
The four PICT alumni who have etched their names as founders of US unicorns are Milind Borate of Druva, Vaibhav Nivargi of Moveworks, Gautam Golwala of Poshmark, and co-founder Neha Narkhede of Confluent.
PICT’s journey in cultivating entrepreneurial spirit dates back to 2009 when it established its Entrepreneurship Development Cell. The primary objective of this cell is to instill a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students, providing them with the necessary support to convert their ideas into tangible products or services that create value.
Director of PICT, Pralhad Kulkarni, expressed pride in the institute’s achievements, stating, “We have a startup and innovation cell to translate innovations, findings, and research of the students into a meaningful product or service that creates value, by motivating and supporting the innovation.”
PICT’s emphasis on practical application and support for student-driven innovation has evidently played a pivotal role in shaping the success stories of its alumni on the global stage.
