Pune’s Kondhwa Slaughterhouse Set for Privatization by PMC for Enhanced Management

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has embarked on a strategic move to privatize one of Pune’s significant slaughterhouses, situated in Kondhwa. Dr. Sarika Funde, Veterinary Superintendent at PMC, confirmed the ongoing efforts, highlighting the intention to improve the management and upkeep of the facility through privatization.

In a conversation, Dr. Funde stated, “The slaughterhouse in Kondhwa has been under consideration for privatization by the PMC. The construction of this slaughterhouse aimed to provide an official space for animal slaughter. To ensure optimal maintenance, the PMC is in the process of outsourcing the facility, allowing a private firm to handle its operations. The tender for this privatization has been floated, and the entire transition, from bidding to the handover, is anticipated to take at least one month.”

Back in 2019, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) granted permission for the construction of an effluent treatment plant at the slaughterhouse location. Despite this approval, a senior official from the local government revealed that the slaughterhouse is currently operating below its full capacity due to staffing shortages and insufficient facility revenue.

As part of the existing operational model, the administration charges Rs 280 per animal upon admission, encompassing Rs 200 for veterinary care and Rs 80 for slaughter. A pre-slaughter health examination is conducted to ensure compliance with regulations.
