Pune’s Infrastructure Boost: Bopkhel Bridge Nearing Completion

Residents of Bopkhel in Pune can soon expect a significant improvement in their daily commute as the new bridge connecting the area prepares to open for traffic by the end of August 2024. This development comes as a relief after years of inconvenience caused by the closure of the road from Dapodi to Bopkhel village via the CME area following a court order in May 2015.

Background of the Project

The closure of the Dapodi-Bopkhel road forced commuters to take a detour of approximately 15 to 16 kilometers via Bhosari or Vishrantwadi, drastically increasing travel time and fuel costs. Recognizing the necessity to alleviate this burden, a tender was initiated on July 20, 2019, to construct a bridge at the site. The project, awarded to M/s T&T Infra Ltd. for Rs. 53,53,37,594, enlisted the expertise of M/s Stup Consultants Pvt. Ltd. as consultants.

Project Details and Progress

The bridge, spanning 1856 meters in length and 8.40 meters in width, includes approach roads extending 58 meters on the Bopkhel side and 262 meters on the Khadki side. Despite encountering delays related to the relocation of high-voltage power lines and Mahatransco towers, the project is now 98% complete. Civil works are nearing conclusion, paving the way for the bridge’s imminent opening.

Impact on Commuters

Once operational, the new bridge will significantly reduce the travel distance from Bopkhel to Dapodi to just 2.9 kilometers through the Khadki Cantonment area, benefitting citizens, students, and workers alike. This streamlined route promises to save time, cut fuel expenses, and contribute to environmental conservation by minimizing carbon emissions from prolonged detours.

Community Response and Future Prospects

Pramod Ombhase, Deputy City Engineer of the Project Department, highlighted the impending convenience for Bopkhel residents and workers. Coordination efforts with the Defense Department and traffic authorities are underway to ensure a smooth traffic transition upon the bridge’s opening.
