Pune’s Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary Faces Threat from Illegal Dumping

Preservation Efforts Hampered as Political Figures Claim Ownership, Resulting in Environmental Degradation

The tranquil expanse of the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Pune, celebrated for its rich avian biodiversity, is under siege due to rampant illegal dumping of debris and garbage. Recent reports have brought to light the alarming situation where hundreds of trucks and tractors have been indiscriminately depositing waste within the sanctuary’s boundaries, posing a grave threat to its delicate ecosystem.

In response to mounting concerns, Somnath Bankar, assistant commissioner of Nagar Road (Vadgaon Sheri) Zonal Office, has taken action by imposing a hefty fine of Rs 5,000 for littering within the sanctuary. However, the underlying issue persists as political figures assert dubious ownership claims over the land, perpetuating the cycle of environmental degradation.

Despite efforts to safeguard the sanctuary, the relentless dumping of various materials such as concrete blocks, furniture, and plastic has led to a concerning rise in ground level and obstruction of drainage systems. This wanton disregard for environmental preservation not only endangers the habitat of indigenous and migratory birds but also raises the specter of flooding in nearby residential areas during monsoon seasons.

The sanctuary, established three decades ago as a testament to the pioneering work of Dr. Salim Ali, is now at risk due to encroachments by individuals exploiting legal loopholes and historical ambiguities regarding land ownership rights. Dr. Farokh Wadia’s noble donation of land for the sanctuary’s conservation is being undermined by vested interests seeking to exploit the sanctuary for personal gain.

While legal battles ensue in the Bombay High Court, businesses have brazenly set up operations within the sanctuary premises, further exacerbating the environmental crisis. The establishment of buffalo herds, goat-rearing ventures, and even the construction of a temple within the sanctuary reflects the flagrant disregard for ecological integrity in pursuit of commercial interests.

As authorities grapple with the complex legal and environmental challenges posed by the sanctuary’s predicament, urgent action is needed to halt the wanton destruction of this natural haven. Efforts to hold accountable those responsible for illegal dumping must be coupled with initiatives to reinforce the sanctuary’s status as a protected area, ensuring its preservation for future generations to cherish and enjoy.
