Pune’s Digital Leap: DigiLocker Now Hosts Marriage Certificates

In a significant move to simplify bureaucratic processes, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has become the pioneer municipality in India to offer digital marriage certificates directly on the ‘DigiLocker’ platform. This groundbreaking initiative aims to alleviate the hassles associated with obtaining and preserving marriage certificates, marking a pivotal step towards a more efficient and technology-driven governance system.

The ‘DigiLocker’ platform, established by the central government, has become a repository for various documents, including Aadhaar cards, driving certificates, PAN cards, and more, allowing citizens to access and share their information seamlessly through a mobile interface. Now, PMC has extended this convenience to marriage certificates, envisioning a future where Pune residents can effortlessly present their actual birth certificates for passport applications.

Rahul Jagtap, Head of the Information Technology Department at PMC, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Pune Municipal Corporation has succeeded in making marriage certificates available on ‘DigiLocker’. Pune has become the first municipality in the country to provide this facility.”

The implementation of this system in Pune follows successful preliminary testing, paving the way for a smoother passport application process for citizens. The PMC has integrated marriage certificates into the ‘DigiLocker’ system through its All Nine system, ensuring a seamless experience for users.

To obtain their marriage certificate online, citizens can simply enter their marriage certificate number in the ‘DigiLocker’ app. This move aligns with the central government’s broader vision of issuing passports without the need for physical documents, with marriage certificates emerging as a key component of this digital transformation.

As Pune sets the precedent, the central government has issued directives to other cities across the country, urging them to develop similar systems for the digitization of essential documents.

This innovative step by PMC not only reduces bureaucratic hurdles but also aligns with the ongoing efforts to create a more digitally inclusive and streamlined administrative process for the benefit of citizens.
