Pune’s Chandni Chowk Area A Royal Mess: Satyajeet Tambe

MLC Satyajit Tambe has taken to social media to highlight the alarming state of traffic in Pune. Tambe urged the Traffic Control Department to address the issue promptly and alleviate the problem of traffic congestion.

“Several IT companies have relocated from Pune in recent years due to the persistent traffic jams. However, the traffic situation has not improved. The complex road network in the NDA area, known as Chandni Chowk (now called NDA Chowk), often leaves commuters bewildered, causing inconvenience not only to motorists but also to pedestrians. Unfortunately, it appears that the situation has worsened,” Tambe expressed.

The National Highway Authority has invested 397 crores in the construction of 17 kilometers of roads, which include 8 ramps, 2 service roads, 2 underpasses, and 4 bridges. Tambe remarked, “While there are directional signboards in some areas along these roads, their visibility is compromised in certain sections. This results in drivers struggling to navigate the roads and locate signage. A wrong turn can force them to take a two-kilometer detour.”

Despite the construction of new roads, pedestrian issues persist, and the apprehension of accidents among pedestrians has grown due to the convergence of multiple roads from various directions.

“It’s not just a traffic problem; it’s also about the mental distress and anxiety experienced by the people. The substantial expenses incurred in laying new roads do not seem to provide effective solutions. Given these challenges, prioritizing comprehensive urban planning alongside city development is imperative,” Tambe emphasized.

The deteriorating traffic situation in Pune’s Chandni Chowk area is a matter of concern, and local authorities need to address it promptly to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of commuters and pedestrians.
