Pune’s Ambitious Move: PMC’s Rs 1384 Crore Sewage Management Plan for 23 Villages

Pune Municipal Corporation

Pune, 6th November 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking a significant step towards improving the quality of life for residents in 23 newly included villages. With a forward-thinking initiative, PMC plans to establish a comprehensive sewage management system, addressing long-standing concerns about infrastructure facilities in these areas.

The expansion of PMC’s jurisdiction in July 2021 brought 23 villages under its umbrella, making it imperative to develop the necessary infrastructure. The rapid growth in construction and population in the region has intensified sewage-related challenges, further highlighting the need for a comprehensive solution. In 2017, eleven villages were incorporated into the municipality, with sewage channel and sewage treatment projects worth Rs 392 crore already underway and expected to be completed by 2025.

The newly devised plan for these 23 villages takes into account population growth projections until 2054. It involves the creation of an extensive network of 471 km of sewage canals, with the primary sewage channels extending over 90.52 km. The estimated cost for this monumental project is Rs 922.65 crores. Additionally, the plan includes the construction of seven sewage treatment plants, with a collective capacity of 201 MLD, located at Mahalunge, Pisoli, Nanded (Pune), Holkarwadi, Wagholi, Manjari, and Gujar Nimbalkarwadi, with a projected cost of Rs 450.73 crores. The comprehensive proposal totals Rs 1384.12 crore, encompassing various other vital works.

To ensure the successful execution of this ambitious project, PMC plans to initiate work in areas slated for imminent land acquisition. Manjari and Mahalunge are the initial locations for the project’s first phase, which carries a price tag of Rs 530 crores. PMC will invite loan proposals from banks to secure this funding, with the loan being procured from the bank offering the most favorable interest rate.

With this progressive approach, PMC is not only addressing immediate concerns but is also planning for the long-term well-being of the residents in these newly included villages. This move marks a significant step toward sustainable urban development in the Pune region.
