Puneites will not have to suffer due to floods; Good news from the Centre

PUNE: Since a few years, citizens have had to face serious problems due to the floods caused by heavy downpour. Hence, the PMC has prepared a flood management plan as per the Centre’s guidance. The Central government has given its approval for the plan. Hence, various packages will be prepared as per the plan. The work of preparing a pre-calculation sheet is in the final stage. After this is approved, the tenders will be floated.

The Centre has prepared an Urban Flood Risk Management scheme. Due to increasing urbanisation, the incidents of flooding during monsoon have increased. The scheme is applicable to Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. The Centre has prepared a ₹1,000 crore scheme. As a part of this scheme, the PMC is going to prepare a flood management plan.

The civic body will have to spend ₹250 crore for carrying out these works. The PMC has made a presentation to NDRF and fundamental changes and modern technology will be used to prevent floods in the city. In next five years, Pune city will receive funds through 14th and 15th Finance Commission. The PMC has prepared the plan with the help of C-DAC. The Centre has approved this plan and the PMC is going to prepare various packages. The work of preparing a pre-calculation sheet is in the final stage. Only after this is approved, the tenders of the works will be floated.

In last three-four years, the incidents of heavy rain in a short span of time have increased. Three-four incidents of 5 mm to 100 mm rainfall in one hour have been recorded. The civic body has identified 148 dangerous spots where water gets accumulated and efforts are being made to prevent such happening.

What does the plan include?

Building of culverts on nalas which are flooded

Mapping of nalas through drones

Changing of storm water drains

Setting up command and control centre

Building Gabian wall on nalas

Build more storm water drains in city and newly-included areas

Installation of cameras at dangerous places

Increasing the number of sensors giving information about flooding of river and nalas

Dr Kunal Khemnar, Addl Municipal Commissioner, said, “The Centre has recently approved the flood management plan. Hence, the work of preparing a pre-calculation sheet is in the final stage. After the sheet is approved, the tenders of the works will be floated.”
