Pune Witnesses Surge in Bharat Series Vehicle Registrations, Exceeding 7,000 in 2023

The Bharat series (BH) vehicle registrations in Pune experienced a remarkable uptrend in 2023, with over 7,000 personal vehicles, including both two and four-wheelers, registering under the BH number plate series, as per data shared by the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO). This surge marks an impressive 87% growth compared to the previous year, showcasing the popularity of the BH series.

The data reveals a substantial increase in both four-wheeler and two-wheeler registrations, with a growth rate of 79% and 110%, respectively. After a slower start in October 2021, the BH number plate series has gained significant traction among vehicle owners in Pune.

Deputy Regional Transport Officer Sanjiv Bhor shed light on the purpose behind the BH series, stating that it was introduced to simplify the process of transferring vehicle registration when individuals move from one state to another. Eligibility for the BH series is extended to employees of the central government, including those in defence, banking, administration, and private companies with offices in four or more states or Union territories.

Bhor emphasized that employees under the BH series do not enjoy tax exemptions. They are required to pay taxes based on a formula outlined by the central government, with payments due every two years for up to 16 years. The BH number series effectively addresses the challenge of repaying taxes and re-registering vehicles each time an employee relocates.

Pune has witnessed a notable surge in BH registrations, attributed to the significant presence of employees from private companies, particularly in the IT and multinational sectors, according to Bhor.
