Pune Weather Update: Anticipating Light Rainfall and Subdued Monsoon Activity

Pune Weather Update : As the late arrival of the monsoon in July took the state by surprise, the subsequent weeks witnessed a decline in the amount of rainfall experienced in August. The preceding month saw intense showers, ranging from heavy to very heavy, across regions like Konkan and Vidarbha, resulting in inundated villages and triggering the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. However, the vigor of the rain has waned since the commencement of August, and this trend is projected to persist for a few more days.

On the recent Tuesday, no district in the state was issued any weather alerts. According to the Meteorological Department, a bout of rainfall is anticipated in the foothills of the Himalayas over the next three days. Meanwhile, moderate rainfall is on the forecast for Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal. Additionally, the Konkan region is also predicted to receive its share of rainfall after the same three-day period.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has outlined the potential for another round of rain in the state post-August 15. The IMD’s assessment highlights the influence of El Nino on this year’s monsoon. While Skymet’s earlier prediction leaned toward below-normal rainfall, the IMD’s projection indicates an expectation of average rainfall. The Forecasting department has emphasized that heavy rainfall is unlikely anywhere in the state until August 10.

Over the last four consecutive years, India has enjoyed favorable monsoon conditions from 2019 to 2022. The term “El Nino” denotes elevated sea surface temperatures in the equatorial eastern Pacific, specifically off the coasts of Ecuador and Peru. This anomalous warming triggers escalated evaporation and concentrated cloud-formation activity in those regions, leading to substantial rainfall. However, regions such as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia on the opposing end of the tropical Pacific experience diminished convective currents, resulting in meager rainfall and drought conditions. These climatic intricacies have the potential to impact India as well.
