Pune: Violation of traffic rules! Repeat offenders’ licences to be suspended

PUNE: Traffic indiscipline is increasing in the city. To control this wayward behaviour, the licences of repeat defaulters are being suspended. At present, on an average every month, licences of 100 vehicle owners are suspended for three to six months. The action has been taken by the RTO based on proposals of the traffic police.

The list of repeat traffic offenders is sent to the RTO by the traffic police. A recommendation is also made asking the RTO to suspend the licence of erring vehicle owners. The RTO takes action every month on the proposals sent by the traffic police. The licence is suspended for a tenure of three to six months based on the traffic offence committed by vehicle owners.

During the January-June period, the RTO had suspended licences of 618 people. Some of the offences include driving under the influence of liquor, overspeeding, breaking signals, not wearing helmets, speaking on mobiles while driving, overloading of vehicles, carrying more passengers than necessary etc. The concerned vehicle owner is informed online about the suspension of his licence.

If the vehicle owner is found riding a vehicle, when the licence has been suspended, he can be fined ₹5,000 and his vehicle may be seized.

“Vehicle owners can ride a vehicle after the licence suspension period is over. The only exception is those driving under the influence of liquor. They have to get their vehicles checked and appear for a test again. Later, they get the licence to drive a vehicle,” said Sanjeev Bhor, In-charge RTO.

“The traffic police send a recommendation about suspending the driving licences of repeat offenders to the RTO. We send a list every week. Every month, we send lists containing names of 100 to 150 people,” said Vijaykumar Magar, DCP, Traffic Branch.
