In a concerted effort to curb the use of modified silencers contributing to noise pollution, the Pune traffic police have issued fines to over 2,000 bikers within a span of 12 days. The special drive, initiated on February 7, aims to address the increasing concerns raised by residents and tackle the annoyance caused by bikers using altered exhaust systems.
The drive has not only targeted individual bikers but has also extended warnings to six car repair shops in the Nana Peth area. These shops were cautioned against selling modified silencers that violate noise pollution regulations.
A senior Pune Traffic Police officer highlighted that the use of modified silencers not only disturbs the peace but also leads to noise pollution and sound-related complaints, particularly during late-night group rides. College and university students, along with pedestrians and the elderly, have been significantly inconvenienced by the noise generated by these reckless bikers.
To address the issue comprehensively, the Pune Traffic Police have proposed stringent measures, including canceling the driving licenses of individuals caught using modified silencers for the second time. Moreover, parents of minors found riding two-wheelers with altered exhaust systems will be contacted by the police.
As part of their efforts to deter violators, the police have also initiated the impoundment of motorcycles for a full day, during which the modified silencers are removed and destroyed. Residents from various localities, such as Koregaon Park, Baner NIBM Road, Magarpatta, Mohammadwadi, Kalyani Nagar, Boat Club Road, Katraj, Yerawada, Sinhagad Road, have consistently reported noise pollution concerns, prompting the authorities to take decisive action.
