Pune: A distressing case of financial fraud has come to light from Pune’s Undri area as cyber thieves swindled 72-year-old Alok Harikishanlal Chhibbar, a resident of Hills and Dales Society in Undri, out of a staggering 14 lakhs. The incident occurred on August 17, 2023, within the senior citizen’s home.

Mr. Chhibbar lodged a formal complaint at the Kondhwa Police Station, leading to the registration of a case against the four unidentified mobile phone holders under sections 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The modus operandi employed by the fraudsters involved contacting the senior citizen on his mobile phone, urging him to download a specific application apk under the pretext of updating his PAN card. Subsequently, the unsuspecting victim unknowingly shared his One-Time Password (OTP) with the cybercriminals. Exploiting this lapse, the perpetrators brazenly withdrew a hefty sum of Rs 13 lakh and 86 thousand from Mr. Chhibbar’s bank account.

Upon discovering the financial deception, the plaintiff promptly reported the incident to the Pune Cyber Police Station, leading to the initiation of an investigation. The case has been officially registered at the Kondhwa Police Station, and Female Assistant Police Inspector Kudale is conducting further inquiries into it.
