Pune Porsche Crash: Police Officers Suspended for Negligence; Case Handed to Crime Branch

The aftermath of the tragic Porsche crash in Pune has seen significant developments, with the Pune Police taking swift action against officers deemed responsible for lapses in handling the case. In a decisive move, two officers from the Yerwada Police Station have been suspended for dereliction of duty during the initial response to the incident, which claimed the lives of two IT engineers on May 19.

Suspension of Officers

Police Inspector Rahul Jagdale and Assistant Police Inspector Vishwanath Todkari, stationed at Yerwada Police Station, have faced suspension for their mishandling of the investigation and failure to promptly report the incident to the wireless control room. Confirming the suspension, a senior police officer highlighted the gravity of the officers’ negligence in the crucial early stages of the case.

Transfer to Crime Branch

The Pune Police has transferred the case to its Crime Branch for further investigation. Initially under the purview of the Yerwada Police Station, the case now falls under the jurisdiction of the specialized investigative unit. This move reflects the authorities’ commitment to conducting a thorough and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

Commissioner’s Statement and Internal Inquiry

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar addressed the media, indicating forthcoming punitive measures against officials involved in the early handling of the Porsche crash case. An internal inquiry conducted by an Assistant Commissioner of Police revealed lapses in the officers’ response to the incident, prompting swift disciplinary action.

Kumar acknowledged the timing lapse in collecting the minor driver’s blood samples but emphasized that the culpability of the accused does not hinge solely on forensic evidence. The Commissioner reiterated that the available evidence substantiates the minor’s culpable actions, irrespective of the blood test results.

The Incident and Legal Proceedings

The fatal crash occurred at Kalyani Nagar junction in Pune, resulting in the tragic demise of two IT engineers, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta. The 17-year-old minor, allegedly driving the Porsche under the influence, collided with a motorcycle, leading to the fatalities.

In a related development, the minor’s father, accused of entrusting the car keys to his underage son, has been remanded to 14 days of magisterial custody by a special court. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of the charges against the father, who allegedly facilitated the underage and unlicensed driving that led to the fatal accident.
