Pune Municipal Corporation Ramps Up Road Maintenance; Full Administrative System to Roll Out for 15 Key Roads

Pune Municipal Corporation

Pune: The Additional Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation announced on Friday that starting next week, the complete administrative system will be put on the oversight of the maintenance of 15 major roads within the city limits. In December 2023, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) identified 15 major roads in Pune, and accordingly, works on these roads have been started in a phased manner in December itself.

However, in renewed interest in the completion and transformation of the city’s important roads, the additional commissioner of PMC put forward the plan of setting the systems, such as the works of removing the waste on the road, removing encroachment, cleaning, washing the roads with STP water, and painting the dividers, into operation. This project is set to start in its new vigour next week.

The municipal corporation has informed that no encroachment will be allowed on this road for at least next three years. Similarly, there will be no digging on the road. Further, it is instructed to cleanse dividers and road furniture, and along with this, unauthorised boards, posters, and overhead cables will be kept free on these roads.

Additional Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Vikas Dhakne had already ordered the encroachment department to remove the encroachments on these roads. Accordingly, illegal construction on city roads was demolished. Illegal handcarts parked on the roads were also removed. As a part of this project, illegal constructions in Yerawada were removed following PMC’s orders.

On the backdrop of the initiatives of Maha Swachhata Abhiyan in cities such as Mumbai and Thane, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has recently ordered the implementation of those initiatives in Pune. Accordingly, the PMC Administration has planned that fifteen major roads in the city will be cleaned and washed with water.

15 major roads identified by PMC as ideal roads in Pune are as follows:

Ahmednagar Road
Solapur Road
Magarpatta Road
Pashan Road
Sangamwadi Road
Pune Airport Road
Karve Road
Paud Road
Satara Road
Bibvewadi Road
North Main Road
Ganesh Khind Road
Bajirao Road
Old Pune-Mumbai Highway
Senapati Bapat Road

The total length of these roads is 92 km. The longest road is Nagar Road, which is about 14 km long. Work will be done on Baner Road, seven and a half kilometres, and Karve Road, six and a half kilometres. Other roads are approximately three to seven kilometres in length.
