Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Warns of Strict Action Against Illegal Rooftop Restaurants”

Illegal Rooftop Hotels

Pune: The Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Vikram Kumar, has issued a stern warning to Deputy Engineers and Junior Engineers of the Construction Department to take decisive action against all unauthorized rooftop restaurants operating in the city. They have been given a 15-day ultimatum to identify and address these establishments, failing which strict repercussions will follow.

The move comes in response to a barrage of complaints received by the administration, highlighting the nuisance caused by these illegal rooftop eateries to the residents living in close proximity.

Sources reveal that Vikram Kumar convened a meeting with the construction department to address this pressing concern. Unauthorized rooftop restaurants have proliferated not only in the city center but also in suburban areas. These establishments operate well into the night, generating disturbances through blaring music, customer commotion, and vehicular noise, all of which disrupt the lives of local residents. Despite the lack of official approval from the Municipal Corporation, these establishments continue to function without hindrance.

Efforts to reach pertinent officials from the PMC Building Department for comment proved unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Instances of inaction often arise due to political influence that some of these establishments wield. However, due to the surge in direct complaints received by the Commissioner, a meeting was convened on August 22nd (Tuesday) to address this issue. The meeting deliberated on concerns related to setbacks, front margins, and the establishment of restaurants on rooftop terraces.

These unauthorized rooftop restaurants not only jeopardize the well-being of citizens but also subject the local populace to undue hardships. To rectify this situation, information about the illegal rooftop establishments subject to action must be submitted within the stipulated 15-day timeframe. Failing this, the Deputy Engineers and Junior Engineers responsible for the respective jurisdictions will be held accountable, warned PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar.
