Pune Municipal Corporation Plans Rs 500 Fine to Combat Open Garbage Dumping

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is considering a substantial increase in fines for open garbage dumping to address the growing issue of littering in the city. The proposal, currently awaiting approval from Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, suggests raising the penalty from Rs 180 to Rs 500, signaling a threefold increase.

The city has witnessed a surge in cases where residents openly dispose of waste in public areas, prompting the municipal administration to take stricter measures. Despite efforts, including deploying staff at frequent dumping spots, some residents continue to engage in unruly behavior.

The existing fine for open garbage dumping is Rs 180, which is comparatively low when compared to penalties for other offenses. To bridge this gap and deter citizens from violating regulations, the administration has proposed a significant increase in the penalty.

Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner, stated, “The proposal to raise the fine to Rs 500 has been submitted for the approval of Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar. This move aims to instill a sense of responsibility among citizens and serve as a deterrent against further littering.”

The administration urges citizens to comply with waste disposal regulations, and efforts are underway to raise awareness for a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Pune. The final decision on the proposed fine increase will be communicated following Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar’s approval.
