Pune Municipal Corporation Embarks on Bridge Repair and Strengthening Initiative

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a significant endeavor to repair and strengthen several bridges across the city, aiming to enhance their structural integrity and prolong their lifespan. Out of the 60 bridges encompassing various categories such as those over lakes, rivers, flyovers, and railway bridges, the PMC’s project department has commenced repair work on 38 aging bridges.

According to Pavan Mapari, Deputy Engineer at PMC’s Project Department, a thorough structural audit was conducted to assess the condition of the city’s bridges. Subsequently, a tender was floated, and repair work focusing on bearing and joint replacements, as well as other necessary repairs, was initiated. The objective is to extend the longevity of these bridges by 25 years, minimizing the need for frequent maintenance.

Mapari explained that among the 38 identified bridges in dire need of repair due to their deteriorating condition, the first phase of repair work is underway for 11 bridges. This prioritization is crucial, considering instances such as the loosening of bearings in a bridge in the Hadapsar area, which necessitated immediate attention to prevent potential hazards.

Regarding the ongoing repair efforts, Mapari stated, “The work order for the repair of 11 bridges has been issued. The primary focus is on repairing and strengthening the bearings, expansion joints, and overall structural reinforcement of these bridges.” He further elaborated on the financial aspects, indicating that an estimated expenditure of Rs 34 to 35 crores is required for the repair and strengthening of all 38 identified bridges. However, with a current allocation of Rs 15 crores for the project, the PMC has prioritized the repair of 11 bridges based on urgency and available funding.

The 11 bridges undergoing repair work in the initial phase include prominent structures such as the Vi. Bha. Patil Bridge in Bopodi, Mhatre Bridge, Rajaram Bridge, Veer Savarkar Flyover, S.M. Joshi Bridge, and several others. These critical infrastructural improvements aim to ensure the safety and reliability of Pune’s bridge network, catering to the city’s growing transportation needs while fostering enhanced connectivity and mobility.
