Pune Municipal Corporation Collaborates with Pollution Board to Address Crematorium Air Pollution

Citizens Propose Solutions Including Online Pass System and Enhanced Publicity of Crematorium Contacts

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has responded to residents’ complaints regarding air pollution from crematoriums by initiating collaborative efforts with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Concerned citizens, officials, and activists convened to discuss potential solutions, highlighting the urgent need for action.

During the meeting, citizens expressed apprehension over the absence of air pollution regulations for crematoriums and urged the PMC to advocate for standardized norms at the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). They emphasized the malfunctioning of current Air Quality Index (AQI) sensors, stressing the necessity for more advanced monitoring systems to accurately measure pollutants, particularly around crematoriums like Vaikunth.

Key stakeholders, including municipal commissioners and environmental officers, deliberated on various proposals to tackle the issue comprehensively. Suggestions ranged from deploying efficient air filtration systems to implementing online pass systems for crematorium usage. Additionally, there were calls for improved infrastructure and public communication, such as publishing contact details of crematoriums to facilitate better distribution of cremation loads.

The meeting underscored the importance of conducting detailed surveys to assess crematorium utilization patterns and the effectiveness of existing pollution control measures. Concerns were raised regarding overcapacity planning at crematoriums, leading to misallocation of resources. Participants emphasized the need for accurate demand assessment to optimize resource allocation.

Vikrant Latkar, a civic activist, highlighted the urgency of addressing maintenance issues at Vaikunth crematorium and suggested measures to alleviate the burden on existing facilities. Similarly, Hema Chari stressed the importance of reducing the load on Vaikunth crematorium and enhancing facilities across all crematoriums.

In response to these concerns, additional municipal commissioner Prithviraj Meena assured that the PMC would collaborate with the MPCB to conduct a comprehensive air quality survey and formulate recommendations. He acknowledged the need to explore alternative cremation sites to alleviate pressure on existing facilities.

As the PMC endeavors to address crematorium-related air pollution, collaboration with the MPCB and active participation from citizens will be crucial in implementing effective solutions and ensuring a healthier environment for all.
