The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is attributing the poor maintenance of city roads to a significant shortage of funds. According to municipal officials, the civic body requires a total of Rs 7,00 Crore to maintain the 1,400 km of city roads, while the budget allocation amounted to only Rs 193 Crore.
Funding Shortfall Amid Road Woes
These revelations come at a time when the municipal corporation faces widespread criticism for the deplorable condition of the city’s roads. Earlier, PMC had claimed that potholes had been filled by officials ahead of the monsoon season. However, activists and citizens have accused officials of failing to carry out the necessary road repairs.
Strict Deadline and Activist Outcry
To address the road maintenance issues, the municipal commissioner issued an order instructing officials from the road department to complete all road repairs by October 7, warning of consequences for failing to meet this deadline. PMC had also recently announced the implementation of the Mission 15 VIP Roads project, drawing ire from activists and citizens who argue that the corporation should prioritize improving existing road conditions before embarking on new projects.
