Pune Ghats on Orange Alert: Heavy Rainfall Expected in City Area for Next 48 Hours

Pune, 26th June 2023: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the ghats in and around Pune city for the next 48 hours, as heavy rainfall is predicted in the region. This alert serves as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.

According to Anupam Kashyapi, the head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, the city area can anticipate an increase in rainfall activity, with moderate rain expected in the range of 15.5 to 64.4 mm over the next 24 hours. Intense spells of rain are also likely to occur during this period.

In light of the adverse weather conditions, Kashyapi has advised the public to avoid visiting the ghats. The orange alert indicates that authorities should be prepared for the situation, and residents should exercise caution if they need to venture into these areas.

Additionally, residents within the city limits have been urged to remain vigilant as the rainfall is expected to be significant enough to cause water stagnation in low-lying areas. Given the current condition of the city roads, the increased rainfall may lead to a rise in the number of potholes, posing challenges for commuters. It is crucial for individuals to exercise utmost care while traveling to prevent accidents or damage to vehicles.

Local authorities have been alerted about the situation and are taking necessary steps to mitigate potential risks. Measures such as ensuring proper drainage systems and prompt repairs of road infrastructure are being implemented to minimize water stagnation. However, residents are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and consider using alternative routes if necessary.

The impact of the predicted heavy rainfall includes localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas, occasional reduction in visibility, and disruption of traffic. Minor damage to kutcha roads and vulnerable structures is also possible, along with the risk of localized landslides/mudslides and damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.

As a precautionary measure, individuals are encouraged to check for traffic congestion on their routes before leaving for their destinations. It is important to follow any traffic advisories issued in this regard and avoid areas that frequently face waterlogging issues. Moreover, staying in vulnerable structures should be avoided to ensure personal safety.

The orange alert serves as a reminder for residents to be prepared for significant changes in weather conditions and to stay updated with the latest information. While the general population may not be at immediate risk, it is essential to remain aware, especially for those engaged in certain activities that may be more vulnerable to the weather conditions.
