Pune: Acting swiftly after gangster Sharad Mohol was shot dead by his accomplice Sahil Polekar and others, the police arrested Polekar and seven others within some hours of the incident.
The Crime Branch Unit 9 of the City Police chased a suspect car on the Pune-Satara highway and held the accused near Kikvi-Shirwal. The arrested accused have been identified as Sahil alias Munna Polekar (20), a resident of Kothrud, Vitthal Kisan Gadle (34), a resident of Kothrud, Amit Maruti Kangude (24), a resident of Dhayari, Chandrakant Shahu Shelke (22), a resident of Parvati Vasahat, Vinayak Santosh Ghavalkar (20), a resident of Kothrud, Ravindra Vasantrao Pawar (40) and Sanjay Rambhau Uddan (45), a resident of Kothrud. Arun Dhrupad Dhumal (32), a resident of Kothrud, lodged a complaint at the Kothrud Police Station in this regard.
Three pistols, three magazines, five bullets and two four-wheelers have been seized from the possession of the accused. Mohol was killed on the road near his house on Friday afternoon. Preliminary investigation revealed that the murder was a fallout of an old land/money dispute the accused had with the victim.
According to the police, Sharad Mohol had his marriage anniversary on Friday. Hence, he was heading towards the Dagdusheth Ganpati Mandir to seek blessings. Sahil Polekar was also accompanying him. At around 1.15 pm, Polekar and his associates were following Mohol when they shot at him and Mohol’s another aide Pramod Sathe. Mohol was seriously injured and died during treatment.
Polekar and his accomplices escaped. After learning about the incident, the Crime Branch was alerted and its units became active. While searching for the accused, they were located on the Pune-Satara highway. After a chase, they were arrested.
The action was taken under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumaarr, Joint CP (Acting) & Addl CP Ramnath Pokale, and DCP Amol Zende. DCP Sunil Tambe, ACP Satish Govekar and their colleagues took part in the action.
