Pune District Elections: Deployment of Multiple EVMs as Candidate Count Surges

The electoral fervor in Pune district intensifies as a total of 35 candidates gear up for the Lok Sabha elections, with each constituency witnessing a significant candidate count. To accommodate this surge, authorities have opted to deploy three electronic voting machine (EVM) ballot units in each constituency.

Key Points:

  • Pune district prepares for a bustling electoral contest with 35 candidates in Pune constituency, 38 in Baramati, 33 in Maval, and 32 in Shirur.
  • With each EVM capable of handling up to 64 candidates, including the NOTA option, provision for 16 candidates per unit is made.

  • In instances where the candidate count exceeds 16, additional units are linked together. Given the tally ranging between 30 to 40 candidates per constituency, the Election Commission has sanctioned an additional 4,500 ballot units.
  • Voting in Baramati is scheduled for May 7, followed by Pune, Maval, and Shirur on May 13. Pune’s collector and district election officer, Suhas Diwase, notes a surge of 2.11 lakh voters in the supplementary list, bringing the total to 83.38 lakh voters district-wide.

  • Shirur constituency, hosting 32 candidates, necessitates the deployment of a third EVM unit to incorporate the NOTA option. Additionally, 1,675 individuals have applied for the home voting facility, with Pune constituency leading the applications, followed by Baramati, Shirur, and Maval.
  • District election officials anticipate extended counting times owing to the increased number of candidates and EVMs.

The deployment of multiple EVMs underscores the electoral machinery’s readiness to accommodate a diverse array of candidates and ensure a smooth voting process for citizens across Pune district.
