Pune, Maharashtra: In a proactive move against illicit activities, the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Pune International Airport successfully intercepted and seized gold contraband worth ₹93 lakh in three separate incidents in January. The authorities have been transparent about their anti-smuggling efforts, dispelling speculations about withholding seized items’ data.
Superintendent Biji Santosh of the Customs AIU addressed the recent rumours, clarifying that they have been open and transparent in sharing data on anti-smuggling activities. The incidents in January showcase the effectiveness of the surveillance and interception measures in place at Pune Airport.
On January 11, a passenger arriving from Dubai was intercepted, leading to the discovery of a 24k gold belt buckle weighing 150 grams, valued at ₹9.64 lakh. Subsequently, on January 14, a female traveler from Dubai was found with raw gold bangles, a pendant, and other contraband items amounting to ₹11.28 lakh. The third incident on January 20 involved a passenger arriving from Dubai with gold paste cleverly concealed in his underwear, weighing 1,356 grams and valued at ₹73.28 lakh.
Pune Airport Director Santosh Dhoke emphasized the stringent surveillance measures in place at the airport. With passenger traffic projected to reach 9 million in 2024, the entire airport is under CCTV surveillance, allowing thorough scrutiny of arriving passengers and potential smuggling activities.
