Pune: Connecting India Trust’s Initiative Saves 5080 Lives From Suicidal Thoughts In Past Year

In a heartwarming achievement, Connecting India Trust, a dedicated organization focused on providing emotional support, has successfully prevented 5080 individuals from contemplating suicide over the past year. This initiative underscores the pivotal role of emotional support during moments of extreme distress and despair, offering a lifeline to those grappling with suicidal thoughts.

CEO of Connecting India Trust, Sukhda Khisti, emphasized the significance of this initiative, particularly in light of World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10. She stressed the importance of understanding and support for individuals facing emotional turmoil, highlighting the need for empathetic listening over judgment and advice.

“Suicide is a tragic consequence of emotional distress, and it is our responsibility to extend a helping hand to those in need,” Khisti asserted. “Many individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts often feel isolated, believing they have no one to turn to or fear that they won’t be understood or accepted. Connecting India Trust provides a safe space for individuals to openly express their emotions without fear of judgment, unsolicited advice, or the need to disclose personal information.”

The rising suicide rate in India is a matter of grave concern, with Maharashtra registering the highest number of suicides in the country, totaling a staggering 164,000 annually. Shockingly, 28 students in India commit suicide each day, underscoring the urgency of addressing this pressing issue. Several factors, including financial woes, relationship stress, loneliness, and unfulfilled expectations, contribute to emotional distress, ultimately leading to suicidal ideation.

Khisti implored society to refrain from passing judgment, advocating instead for empathetic listening and support for organizations like Connecting India Trust in their mission to provide much-needed emotional support to individuals in crisis. The organization operates a helpline that encourages individuals to openly express their stress and emotions without fear of receiving advice or judgment. The helpline is operational from 10 am to 8 pm and can be reached at 9922004305 or 9922001122. Additionally, individuals can communicate via email at [email protected] and arrange in-person visits by contacting 8484033312.

In the fiscal year 2022-23, Connecting India Trust extended emotional support to a remarkable 5883 individuals. The majority of callers were male, constituting 68 percent of the total, while female callers comprised 38 percent. The most prevalent reasons for seeking support included family problems (24 percent), relationship tension (25 percent), mental stress (13 percent), job and career-related issues (9 percent), and educational problems (8 percent). The age group seeking the most support fell between 18 to 35 years old, and the organization received 803 requests for emotional support via email.

Connecting India Trust continues to make significant strides in offering a glimmer of hope to those in despair. They work tirelessly to prevent suicide and provide a vital lifeline to individuals who find themselves in dire need of emotional support.
